Here in New England, a working sump pump is your home’s first line of defense against spring thaws and heavy summer storms. It moves accumulated groundwater away from your foundation, saving you thousands of dollars in potential water damage and mold remediation. But how do you know if your system is ready for the next big rain?
James A. Dalelis Plumbing & HVAC recommends homeowners perform these quick checks periodically:
Like any mechanical device, sump pumps have a limited lifespan. Whether due to age or lack of maintenance, failure often happens at the worst possible time. Common reasons your pump may stop working include:

Fast, efficient, and professional. I went to turn my heat on and realized my boiler wasn’t working. It was a Friday before a long holiday weekend but James had one of his guys there first thing Monday morning and my heat was back up and running in just a few hours! Thank you so much!! Highly recommend
Met with me on short notice and took the time to talk about all options, but brief and to the point.
Helped me make a better decision.
Went above and beyond so the work got done in a timely manor and we're very satisfied with the results.
Thank you, James & Crew.
Excellent service. Responded quickly to confirm my appointment and the work was completed quickly the same day. We will be using this company for our yearly heating maintenance.
I had a great experience working with James and his team to install our new boiler and water heater. He worked to understand our needs, gave us solid advice, and provided a competitive bid with no extras or upsells (and no BS!). His work was very professionally done, and it was obvious that he took great pride in his work and in providing the most useful components. He also took the time to explain the work, how the equipment worked, and made sure the settings were what we we were looking for. All in all a great experience, and we will be working with him again.
The average lifespan of a sump pump is about 7 to 10 years. However, this depends on how often it runs. If you live in a high-water-table area where the pump runs constantly, it may wear out sooner. We recommend replacing any pump over 10 years old proactively to avoid a basement flood.
We highly recommend them. Standard sump pumps run on electricity. If a thunderstorm knocks out your power, your primary pump stops working exactly when you need it most. A battery backup acts as a safety net, keeping your basement dry even during a blackout.
If your sump pit smells like rotten eggs or sewage, the trap in the discharge line may have dried out, allowing sewer gas to escape, or there may be stagnant water breeding bacteria in the pit. James A. Dalelis Plumbing & HVAC can clean the pit and check the venting to eliminate the odor.
No. Sump pumps require significant voltage to start up. Using an extension cord can cause a voltage drop that damages the pump motor or creates a fire hazard. Sump pumps should always be plugged directly into a dedicated GFCI outlet.
A humming sound usually indicates the motor is receiving power, but the impeller is jammed (perhaps by a small rock) or the check valve is stuck. Turn off the power immediately to prevent the motor from burning out and call us for a repair.
